DESCRIPTION:The Nordic welfare states are usually assigned the status of gender equal states\, where full time paid work can be combined with motherhood (and daughterhood). This has been based upon large parts of care as a responsibility of the state and professionalization of care for pre-school children\, sick and elderly. However\, decades of neo-liberalism in terms of marketization\, self-responsibilizing and increasing reliance on volunteering have had effects upon welfare professionals and those traditionally considered vulnerable. SUMMARY:Mapping Morality in Global Health
DESCRIPTION:CRASSH Conference Cambridge: Contemporary discussions about global health are rife with accusations\, assumptions and assertions of morality\, immorality and the irrelevance of both. \nNew tensions and debates regarding morality in global health have arisen from a long history of colonial and mission medicine\, post-colonial internationalism\, and ever-changing formulations of equity and provision. Some of these discussions see classical moral reasoning re-examined\, for example\, the rise of ‘effective altruism’ and its challenges to the role of the emotive and political. Others resent the reliance on big data and pragmatism that shapes utilitarian approaches to global health. The quieter assertions of amorality around pursuits of medical science and the angry indictments levelled at the economic models of pharmaceutical complexes rely on moralising language\, too.\nThis conference will provide a forum to vocalize\, exorcise and ignite ideas of morality in global health. By bringing together scholars from disciplines such as anthropology\, history\, economics\, epidemiology\, political science\, literature and theology\, we hope to chart the forms and places of morality in global health. \n£40 (full price) or £20 (student/unwaged)

SUMMARY:The many faces of neoliberalism
DESCRIPTION:Neoliberalism\, unexpectedly and unavoidably\, has many faces. On June 15 Thomas Biebricher\, (professor in political theory and philosophy at Goethe University\, Frankfurt a.M.\, Germany) will present his thoughts on the many faces of neoliberalism. He does so on the invitation of the Foundation Critical Ethics of Care and his presentation will take place at VU Amsterdam. Prof. dr. Andries Baart and prof. dr. Govert Buijs will respond to his lecture. Some of Biebricher’s key articles have been translated into Dutch and a book with a collection of articles will become available on june 15.\n \nUnexpected and unavoidable: The many faces of neoliberalism \nHas the hegemony of neoliberalism finally run its course? Domains such as health care\, welfare\, education\, and even representative democracy itself have been invaded by neoliberal solutions. We were told we needed a smaller state\, responsible citizens and effective markets. \nThe German political theorist Thomas Biebricher argues that the neoliberal project is far from being a thing of the past. He contends that it is continuing in different guises. Neoliberalism is alive and kicking\, forging coalitions with newly emerging movements. \nWhy is this so? Because the problems identified by neoliberal protagonists in the 1930s and 1940s remain to be solved. The democratic state and the economy are officially governed by liberal principles\, such as individual freedoms\, contract theory\, and self-regulating markets. However\, these principles appear to be impotent to regulate the economy in times of ‘extreme capitalism’ and economic crisis. Similarly\, democracy is being challenged by discontent and fear\, and it seems to be paralyzed. DESCRIPTION:This Seminar is dedicated to the analysis of the evolution of “Care” in France and in Japan. Firstly\, the situations and the voices of the French and Japanese nurses working on the place of residence of their patients will be presented. We shall show the reasons and the consequences of a domestic support more important in Japan than in France. The conditions will be also approached under which these activities could be more professionalized. So\, beyond the care in the limited sense\, a real ” society of Care” must be able to be established. Secondly\, this objective and its modalities will be revealed. In this perspective\, exceeding the chain of vulnerabilities needs to address the question of the social recognition of the vulnerable individual. To evoke the necessary development of the collectives of the “Care”\, in France and in Japan\, implies to ask the question of the women’s role in the French and Japanese societies. SUMMARY:Symposium Performing Care
DESCRIPTION:December 15\, Amanda Stuart Fisher (Royal Central School of Speech and Drama in London) and James Thompson (University of Manchester) are organizing the symposium Performing Care in London (UK). Keynote speaker is Maurice Hamington (Portland State University\, Oregon) \nIt is thirty years since Nel Noddings asked ‘why care about caring? (Caring: A Feminine Approach to Ethics 1986). Noddings’s book signaled a shift in moral philosophy away from conceptualisations of an autonomous human subject and towards concepts of relationality and dependence. Hers was not a lone voice\, other theorists such as Carol Gilligan (1982)\, Eva Kittay (1991)\, Joan Tronto (1993)\, Virginia Held (1993) began to lay out philosophical frameworks for a terrain of care ethics which would go on to influence a wide range of interdisciplinary fields such philosophy\, political theory\, education\, nursing and social work. \nRecently\, the concept of care has re-emerged within public consciousness as questions have been raised about our capacity to be caring professionals\, live in a caring community\, or contribute to a more caring society. These concerns become all the more critical in an era marked by the commodification of care\, economic austerity and mass migration. Perhaps as a consequence\, there has been a renewed interest in care ethics with scholars and practitioners examining how care should be positioned in relation to issues from social justice to national security\, as well as examining what might constitute embodied or affective care and how care becomes present in every day contexts. \nHowever\, the concept of care has yet to be fully investigated within performance-based scholarship. This symposium signals the start of a new project that explores how concepts of care can be developed\, troubled and enhanced through an engagement with performance-based work and\, simultaneously\, how performance can be re-thought and re-imagined through a dialogue with care ethics. \nMore information about the symposium you can find here.

SUMMARY:Master class “Practical wisdom beyond rule obedience”
DESCRIPTION:Care\, social work and education are not about following the rules. Rules\, guide lines\, protocols are helpful\, but you have to deal with them in a practically wise manner. Andries Baart and Guus Timmerman did thorough research into what general practitioners perceive\, consider\, assess\, weigh\, do and evaluate at the bedside of their sick and dying patients. The results are best summarized under the heading of ‘practical wisdom’. Professionals have to practice practical wisdom to deliver good care\, social work and education. Practical wisdom beats rule obedience. We can explain that and account for it. \nIn the master class\, the results of this research will be presented by Andries Baart\, extraordinary professor at North-West University\, South Africa. Three researchers will connect his analysis with their knowledge of care\, social work and education. Marij Bontemps is paediatrician\, was member of the board of the St. Jansdal hospital in Harderwijk\, and is doing research into practical wisdom. Sabrina Keinemans is lecturer and researcher at Utrecht University of Applied Sciences and fellow in the Innovation of Social Work research group. Ton Zondervan is lecturer\, teacher educator\, and researcher at Windesheim University of Applied Sciences. \nThe master class is relevant to professionals in the fields of care\, social work and education\, especially for those who just sensibly do what they think that has to be done\, and become tired of the way they have to explain it and account for it. DESCRIPTION:One for All\, All for One?\nA workshop to address ethical\, sociological and normative-political questions concerning the assumption that patient organizations (POs) represent a larger group of affected persons and the justification of advocacy by others. \nOn October 20st 2016 the Department of Medical Ethics and History of Medicine of the University Medical Centre Göttingen and the Ben-Gurion University of the Negev organize a one-day workshop with international experts. Invited speakers: Hester van de Bovenkamp (Erasmus University Rotterdam)\, Aviad Raz (Ben-Gurion University of the Negev)\, Sagit Mor (University of Haifa)\, Ronen Gil (The Autistic Community of Israe))\, Katrin Grüber (Institutes Mensch\, Ethik und Wissenschaft) \nPatient representation\, disability advocacy and health social movements have increasingly been included in decision-making processes over the last decades. The idea that people with disabilities should have a say in health care and health policy is widely accepted and legitimated\, because they are the ones affected by such policies and consuming such care. While in most of the literature it is stated that this democratisation process of health care has not expanded enough\, others have been sceptic about the desirability of further democratisation of health care. Proponents and opponents of ‘more power to people with disabilities’ continue to debate the evidence for inclusion of patient and disability advocacy organizations in decision-making and how ‘lay’-perspectives should be valued. So far\, only little attention has been payed to the assumption that such organizations represent a collective. Important questions are therefore still open\, such as how these organizations come to their knowledge and standpoints\, and whom they actually represent. \nIn this workshop we will address ethical\, sociological and normative-political questions concerning the assumption that patient organizations (POs) represent a larger group of affected persons and the justification of advocacy by others: Is it important that POs form their standpoints democratically? And should advocacy always be self-advocacy? DESCRIPTION:New book on care ethics\nA collection of articles by European care ethicists just came out\, published in German by Campus Verlag / Frankfurt am Main:\nElisabeth Conradi\, Frans Vosman. Praxis der Achtsamkeit. Schlüsselbegriffe der Care-Ethik \n \nFrom Oct. 19-23\, 2016 the famous Frankfurter Buchmesse will take place and this book will be presented there. Several care ethicists from all over Europe contributed\, like Sandra Laugier\, Marian Barnes and Andries Baart\, next to German scholars like Jorma Heier\, Christina Schüess and Helen Kohlen. So contributions\, all-in-all 22\,  from England\, France\, the Netherlands\, Sweden\, Belgium and Germany are included. The backdrop of the book is that care ethics is a political ethical theory\, interdisciplinary\, nurtured by feminist thought\, both ethically and epistemologically innovative. The case for qualitative empirical ethics is made as a necessary counterpart to conceptual research. Care ethical concepts like vulnerability and relational responsability are explained\, and reflected upon in a critical way. By several authors the question is raised whether renewal of care ethics is needed and possible.

SUMMARY:Relation\, Vulnerability\, Love
DESCRIPTION:Relation\, vulnerability\, and love are three concepts we consider important for a theological anthropology in the 21st century. Moreover\, it is a trilogy we read in crescendo. That is\, the primacy of relationality leads us to understand vulnerability as a universal human condition that is the condition of possibility for both suffering and flourishing. Love is the Christian notion that indicates the deepest reality of such relationality and vulnerability as well as its eschatological destiny.  A central concern is that these three notions not only indicate or characterize the content of theological anthropology but also have implications for how theological anthropology is to be done.

One can speak of an increasing globalisation\, differentiation\, feminisation and politacalisation of migration. \nThe aim of the Seminar is to present care and counselling as social action and as a religious and faithful practice that contributes to social cohesion and intercultural\, interreligious and interdisciplinary cooperation. \nThe languages of the Seminar are English and German. Translation will be provided. \n
