SUMMARY:The Third International Young Carers Conference
DESCRIPTION:The need to “IDENTIFY\, SUPPORT\, AND LISTEN TO YOUNG CARERS” are the main recommendations identified by young carers themselves during the previous conference and this entails the participation of a wide range of stakeholders. This 3rd International Young Carers Conference will build on these recommendations and reflect on the concrete actions required to enable young carers to reach their full potential.\nThe Conference aims to shed light on the state-of-the-art in research and practice related to the needs and situation of young carers across the world. The call for abstracts is open for policy-makers\, professionals working with young carers and young carers themselves to share current research\, policy initiative\, innovative practice\, legislation or personal experience. Deadline Thursday 30th April see the link call for abstracts \nYoung carers are children and young people who provide care for a parent or relative with long-lasting limitations (chronic illness\, disability\, frailty or addiction). They carry out\, often on a regular basis and without help or support\, substantial caring tasks and assume a level of responsibility which would usually be associated with an adult. In Europe\, it is estimated that around 7-8% of children have caregiving responsibilities. \nWhile there are positive aspects to caring\, many young carers provide care at great personal expense: they may struggle to balance their daily life with caregiving responsibilities\, experience mental health issues as a result of their caregiving\, face barriers in relation to school\, further education and employment\, they may also have less time for personal development and leisure and feel isolated. \nThe International Young Carers Conference is open to all researchers\, civil society organisations\, practitioners\, decision makers\, service providers and policy makers interested to learn about strategies implemented in different countries to listen to\, identify and support young carers (what worked\, what did not work\, what can be replicated). \nFor more information\, see the conference website or contact Ciara O’Dwyer

SUMMARY:The Hidden World of Care: Medical and Health Humanities Symposium
DESCRIPTION:Join us for an afternoon of dialogue that raises critical questions on care. On November 2\, together with students\, faculty\, and professor emerita Joan Tronto\, we will look at the world through the lens of care. \nRegistration and Program \nAt a moment of political discord in our country\, it is no secret that we face a care deficit. To adequately care for our children\, older people\, and for ourselves has become a challenge. Care impacts us all\, no matter where we live or where we were born. Although political life and institutions should help us to care better\, many caregivers see organizations as hindrances to care. ‘Care’ is also narrowed to care work and a commodity\, professor Joan Tronto would argue\, rather than seeing the full practice of care. Care holds our lives together\, but it is still hidden from public space and that needs to change. During this afternoon\, we grapple with questions such as: what would it mean if we would rethink our private and public commitments from the perspective of care? How should care be distributed\, or who should care\, for whom and why? How can we tell which institutions provide good care? And what would a caring institution look like?

SUMMARY:London Conference In Critical Thought

SUMMARY:Conference on social inclusion
DESCRIPTION:How to envision social inclusion with regard to people with profound intellectual and/or multiple disabilities? \nSocial inclusion has been a core policy goal for the emancipation of people with disabilities since the early sixties. With the Dutch ratification of the UN Convention in 2016 it gained further prominence on the political agenda. However\, it is unclear what social inclusion should entail for people with profound intellectual and/or multiple disabilities\, who often live in sheltered living institutions. To what extent does the concept of social inclusion resonate with their complex daily (care) needs? And how can we know how they experience and value social inclusion themselves? \nThe speakers on this conference will discuss how we can think about social inclusion with regard to the marginalized group of people with profound intellectual and/or multiple disabilities and will help us to verbalize social inclusion to better think\, talk and practice social inclusion in research and practices of good care for people with profound intellectual and/or multiple disabilities. \nSpeakers:\nProf. Dr. Christine Bigby (Professor at La Trobe University in Melbourne\, Director Living with Disability Research Centre) \nProf. Dr. Stacy Clifford Simplican (Senior lecturer at Vanderbilt University in Nashville) \nDr. Alice Schippers (Executive director Disability Studies the Netherlands\, vice president IASSIDD\, senior researcher VUmc in Amsterdam) \nProf. dr. Evelien Tonkens (Professor of Citizenship and Humanisation of the Public Sector at the University of Humanistic Studies in Utrecht) \nAdmission is free\, but you need to sign up for this event\, please click this link: which also gives you the details of the programme \n

SUMMARY:PhD workshop by Joan Tronto - Care in Neoliberal\, Nordic welfare states
DESCRIPTION:The Nordic welfare states are usually assigned the status of gender equal states\, where full time paid work can be combined with motherhood (and daughterhood). This has been based upon large parts of care as a responsibility of the state and professionalization of care for pre-school children\, sick and elderly. However\, decades of neo-liberalism in terms of marketization\, self-responsibilizing and increasing reliance on volunteering have had effects upon welfare professionals and those traditionally considered vulnerable. Tronto will address how care is affected and how these changes relate to a what some have seen as a change in the relationship between productive and reproductive work i.e. as the predominance of a new form of capitalism\, a financialized capitalism. \nMore information about venue and program you find here \nRegistration click here – 10th December 2018 at the latest. Participants must include abstract upon registration if they wish to present a paper. \nDeadline: Papers must be sent no later 2nd of January to PhD Coordinator Julie Skjold Omdal

SUMMARY:Mapping Morality in Global Health
DESCRIPTION:CRASSH Conference Cambridge: Contemporary discussions about global health are rife with accusations\, assumptions and assertions of morality\, immorality and the irrelevance of both. \nNew tensions and debates regarding morality in global health have arisen from a long history of colonial and mission medicine\, post-colonial internationalism\, and ever-changing formulations of equity and provision. Some of these discussions see classical moral reasoning re-examined\, for example\, the rise of ‘effective altruism’ and its challenges to the role of the emotive and political. Others resent the reliance on big data and pragmatism that shapes utilitarian approaches to global health. The quieter assertions of amorality around pursuits of medical science and the angry indictments levelled at the economic models of pharmaceutical complexes rely on moralising language\, too.\nThis conference will provide a forum to vocalize\, exorcise and ignite ideas of morality in global health. By bringing together scholars from disciplines such as anthropology\, history\, economics\, epidemiology\, political science\, literature and theology\, we hope to chart the forms and places of morality in global health. \n£40 (full price) or £20 (student/unwaged)
