SUMMARY:Ethics and Social Welfare in hard times
DESCRIPTION:Changed landscape of social welfare\nThe landscape of social welfare has changed markedly since the financial crisis of 2008 especially where governments\, as in Europe and elsewhere\, have actively pursued an austerity agenda. The 10th Anniversary Conference for the journal Ethics and Social Welfare will address stark ethical challenges concerning how best to manage the impacts both of cuts themselves\, and of ideological shifts to the priorities of the public sector and the wider public sphere. At the same time\, global inequalities\, sharp increases in numbers of refugees and in the migration of workers in care and domestic labor\, remind us of the need for a global perspective. But how should we approach those challenges from an ethical point of view? To what extent does the landscape of values remain the same\, even amid shifts in economic and political circumstances? What responsibilities does society have for the welfare of the most vulnerable\, here and elsewhere? How much does it matter who delivers services to the most vulnerable in society and on what terms? And to what extent do ethical priorities differ\, in hard times? \nInternational and cross-disciplinary\nThis international conference aims to attract academics\, practitioners\, commentators\, activists\, service-users and others with an interest in the relationship between ethics\, social justice and relevant arenas of contemporary policy and practice. Its audience will be cross-disciplinary and contributions addressing social\, political and moral theory\, alongside empirical studies of the impacts of austerity are welcome. But in both respects\, with a focus on the application of key ideas and values in social justice to issues of pressing practical concern. The organizers are keen to include papers exploring the international dimension of these issues of care in light\, for example\, of the current migrant crisis and of the pursuit of austerity economics across Europe and beyond. They place a particular priority on attention to voices seldom heard in the mainstream of debate on these issues and among academics\, on the inclusion of early career researchers alongside their well-established peers. \nIssues and themes\nIssues and themes are: social welfare and theories of equality\, personalization and structural inequality\, impacts of income inequality\, global interdependencies\, fairness\, private sector provision and social justice\, care and/versus justice\, redistribution and recognition\, relevance of traditional ethical theories\, neoliberalism and its alternatives\, inclusion and participation\, marginalized voices\, charity and responsibilities of the rich. \nAll this with a focus on ethical practice in relation to\, for example: class\, gender\, race\, ethnicity\, religious diversity\, disability\, sexuality\, poverty\, migration\, the market as service provider\, children and older people\, families\, healthcare. \nKeynote speakers\n\nEva Feder Kittay (Stony Brook University)\nAndrew Sayer (Lancaster University)\nSue White (University of Birmingham)\n\nMore information\nRegistration and costs: registration will open in June 2016\, with a non-residential fee expected to be £100\, plus optional conference dinner on 1 September.\nA limited number of subsidized places will be available for postgraduate students and those without institutional financial support. \nProposals of papers (300 words) and panels of 3 papers (including a title\, 100-word description\, plus paper outlines) are welcome.\nDeadline: 28 February 2016.\nPlease send submissions to the email address below\, and insert the word ‘SUBMISSION’ at the beginning of the subject line. \nProposals and queries to: 2016esw(at)gmail.com \n

SUMMARY:Ethics in Dementia Care
DESCRIPTION:The number of persons with dementia will rise considerably in the years to come. The increasing prevalence of dementia and the treatment and care for people with dementia present a myriad of important ethical questions and responsibilities. What do we think of the quality of life of people with dementia and of their subsequent end of life? What are the opinions about vulnerability and dignity in case of dementia? What do we consider to be ‘good care’ and ‘a good death’ for persons with dementia? \nThe objective of this summer course is to foster exchanges on foundational\, clinical-ethical and organisational-ethical approaches to dementia care. During the course\, national and international experts will give presentations on various ethical topics in the domain of dementia care. Time will be provided for intensive discussion and interaction. \nThe course is of interest to participants from diverse professional backgrounds\, such as health care administration\, medicine\, nursing\, psychology\, social work\, philosophy and theology\, and is open to healthcare and social workers\, people from universities\, university colleges\, and patient associations\, and members of ethics committees\, and to PhD students undertaking courses of study in these areas. \nFor more information please read: \nhttps://gbiomed.kuleuven.be/english/research/50000687/50000697/ethics-in-dementia-care-booklet-2016.pdf

SUMMARY:Art & psychiatry in borderline times
DESCRIPTION:This summer the Dr. Guislain Museum will transform into the Dirk De Wachter Museum. Triggered by psychiatrist Dirk De Wachter’s bestseller Borderline Times\, the curators of the museum\, Dirk De Wachter and fellow psychiatrist Erik Thys went on the look-out for art reflecting our times. \nFor De Wachter\, the nine symptoms that were indicated in the DSM IV as typical of borderline personality disorder say a lot about the current state of society. His Borderline Times shifted the focus from the individual to the collective. Conclusion: we are living in borderline times. From separation anxiety\, to affective instability or impulsiveness\, the nine criteria are a guiding principle for his sharp analysis. In addition\, he is inspired by the work of Michel Houellebecq and Levinas\, but also by that of artists like Koen van den Broek\, Rinus Van de Velde\, Francis Bacon and others. \nPress release

SUMMARY:Ethical Issues in Human Genomics and Big Data
DESCRIPTION:‘Ethical Issues in Human Genomics and Big Data: the need for Responsible Research and Innovation Innovation’ is the title of the advanced European Bioethics Course which will be organized from 14-18 March 2016 by the department of IQ Healthcare\, sub-department Healthcare Ethics\, Radboud University Medical Center. \nIn this course the nature of human-technology relations will be explored as well as their value. The focus will be on ethical dimensions of developments in medical technology and genomics. Debates about new technologies reveal a need to consider their pro’s and con’s\, preferably at an early stage of their development. At that point it is still possible to alter the technology or choose an intelligent implementation strategy that helps to realize its most attractive aspects and diminish the influence of the less attractive aspects. Such early ethical engagement contributes to responsible innovation. \nKeynote speaker \nProf. dr. Peter Paul Verbeek is professor of Philosophy of Technology and co-director of the DesignLab of the University of Twente. Verbeek’s research focuses on the social and cultural roles of technology and the ethical and anthropological aspects of human-technology relations. \nCourse design \nIn the first two days of this course the primary focus will be on developments in genomics and genetic modification and its consequences for public health interventions\, curative medicine\, patients and citizens. Ethical questions will be addressed by different stakeholders\, such as scientists\, engineers\, health care providers\, and a patient. The debates will be analyzed according to moral frameworks provided during the course. Socratic reasoning and discourse analysis will especially be part of the these day.\nDuring the third and fourth day of this course we aim to provide an insight into the philosophy and ethics of responsible innovation. We will study the meaning of ‘responsibility’ in responsible research and innovation\, explore the role of imagination in moral reflection about technologies that still have to come about\, and become acquainted with concrete tools to conduct responsible innovation. \nLecturers \nInclude: prof. Evert van Leeuwen\,  Simone van der Burg PhD\, prof. Hub Zwart\, PhD\, Jasper Bovenberg JD\, LLM\, PhD\, Andre Krom  PhD\, Vincent Blok PhD\, Steven Dorrestijn PhD\, Marianne Boenink PhD.\nThe lectures by these various experts will introduce basic philosophical and ethical concepts related to genomics and responsible innovation. There will be ample time for plenary discussion with these experts. Small group discussions and working groups are devoted to in-depth exploration and discussions of particular contemporary ethical issues. \nParticipants \nThis course is designed with participants from various backgrounds in mind: researchers working in the field of human genetics\, biomedical sciences\, life sciences\, genetics and biology and physicians doing research that has a genetic component but also for professionals from other areas in healthcare such as physicians and nurses\, health care administrators\, bioethics committee members\, professionals working in the pharmaceutical industry\, professionals in the areas of ethics\, philosophy and theology\, and PhD students undertaking courses of study in any of these areas.

SUMMARY:Masterclass: The patient back to the center of care
DESCRIPTION:On 4 November 2015 Prof. dr. Andries Baart will deliver a masterclass in Utrecht\, the Netherlands\, on the occasion of the publication of the book De patiënt terug van weggeweest. Werken aan menslievende zorg in het ziekenhuis (The patient back from where s/he used to be. Working on professional loving care in the hospital). This book provides insight in the experiences of the Elisabeth Hospital in Tilburg\, the Netherlands. Experiences it gained through a period of transition to fulfill its ambition to become Hollands most lovesome hospital. Two years of preparation\, five years of transition and research\, one year of writing down reflections and lessons learned. \nLessons learned\nThese lessons learned are: \n\nChange along a gradual\, learning path.\nBy exchanging knowledge among all involved;\nBy allowing outsiders to become researching snoopers and critical friens of caregivers;\nBy thinking about care form the viewpoint of care and not from the viewpoint of wellness\, automotive and entertainment industry;\nBy closely connecting moral thinking and practical doing;\nBy thinking about better care from what is morally good in the own care-practice.\n\nAndries Baart en Frans Vosman (red.)\, De patiënt terug van weggeweest. Werken aan menslievende zorg in het ziekenhuis. Amsterdam: SWP 2015 \nA review of the book will soon become available on this website. \nPractical information\nThe masterclass will take place on November 4\, 2015\, from 17.30 until 20.15 at Jaarbeurs\, Beatrixgebouw in Utrecht. Costs are €145 per person which includes supper and a copy of the book ‘De patiënt terug van weggeweest‘ (publication price €39\,90). The entire proceeds from the masterclass will be used for a new foundation that stimulates (care) ethical research into healthcare\, welfare and education practices. \nPlease note that the masterclass will be held in Dutch. \nYou can register via this link. SUMMARY:Who is (rendered) responsible?
DESCRIPTION:Responsibilization and dependency in a changing welfare state\nOn November 4th and 5th 2015\, the Graduate School of the University of Humanistic Studies (Utrecht\, The Netherlands) will present a conference entitled ‘Who is (rendered) responsible? Responsibilization and dependency in a changing welfare state’. \nChanging welfare state\nThomas Biebricher\nIn Western countries\, including The Netherlands\, the structure of the welfare state is changing rapidly. Social and health care policy is consequently aimed at transformation: from a welfare state which takes care of its citizens\, to a state that encourages citizens to ‘participate’ and actively take care of each other. Citizens ought to take responsibility for their own lives and support each other\, instead of ‘passively’ consume services. Several sociologists have framed this development as the ‘responsibilitization’ of our society. Although these responsibilities have not yet been clearly defined\, nor who is responsible for what\, it is clear that social networks will become increasingly important\, as citizens are called upon to take   care of each other. In contrast to the postwar Welfare state\, where new social services were seen as a pathway to freedom and independence from family\, now dependency and support from others are viewed as the ‘new ideals’. \nHowever\, this can be highly problematic\, because it is assumed that everyone is part of a social support network\, and capable of supporting others. Or people might not be familiar articulating their expectations and needs\, ultimately leading to tensions between the trend of responsibilization policies and everyday dependency. During this conference\, we will mutually explore these tensions\, the pitfalls and promises of responsibilization and new dependencies propelled by government policies. \nSpeakers\nHanne Marlene Dahl\nProf. dr. Hanne Marlene Dahl (Roskilde Universitat\, Denmark) and dr. Thomas Biebriecher (Goethe Universität\, Germany)\, two internationally renowned scholars\, will host a keynote lecture and also present their views during plenary presentations and during master classes. During the first conference-day\, the key notes will be co-refereed by scholars of several research groups of the organizing organization\, i.e. the University of Humanistic Studies. During the second day of the conference\, each research group organize a chaired session\, in collaboration with the PhD-students of the Graduate School. \nInformation\nThe two day conference takes place in the city centre of Utrecht that is characterized by late medieval and many 18th and 19th century buildings. Conference location is the Universiteit voor Humanistiek. \nThe costs of the two-day conference will be € 120\,00 (including coffee\, tea and lunch). \nFor more information\, have a look at this flyer. SUMMARY:Exhibition: The problem of God
DESCRIPTION:The exhibition ‘The Problem of God’ in the K21 Ständehaus in Düsseldorf relates to a fundamental problem of belief: God’s invisibility. It shows how the image-tradition of Christianity as universal cultural and social inheritance has developed further in a secular context. \n120 works of art\, most of them created in the last 25 years\, are brought together in Düsseldorf. It encompasses paintings\, drawings\, woodcuts\, sculptures\, collages and objects and also video- and film art\, performances and complex space-\, light- and sound installations. Internationally renowned artists are part of it\, such as Eija-Liisa Ahtila\, Francis Alÿs\, Berlinde de Bruyckere\, Francis Bacon\, Janet Cardiff\, Tacita Dean\, Marlene Dumas\, Harun Farocki\, Katharina Fritsch\, Kris Martin\, Hermann Nitsch\, Robert Rauschenberg\, James Turrell\, and Bill Viola. The exhibition varies from fundamental existential questions to humoristic-critically questioning some aspects of religion and belief and current social themes. \nAn example of a critical approach is an installation of the Chinese-American artist Paul Chan. In a trapezoid of light\, shadows of floating objects are visible. At first glance cheerful and playful but then the spectator discovers to his horror people falling down; an awful reminder of the attacks on the Twin Towers. \nRead the full article on this exhibition. \n  \n
